Moorhouse Academy

Having established a strong relationship with Watergrove Trust through prior works at Wardle Academy and Matthew Moss High School, Define was appointed to carry out a partial internal reconfiguration of Moorhouse Academy. The project focused on two key areas within the academy: the Early Years foundation Stage (EYFS), comprising the nursery and reception classrooms with associated WCs, and the SEND department.
Within the EYSF classrooms,  infrared ceiling panels were used for their energy efficiency and child safety. An alternative that would satisfy child safety would’ve been low surface temperature radiators, however these would have occupied significant wall space. By using ceiling panels, the limited wall space is retained for classroom displays.

EYFS Classrooms

Knauf wood wool ceiling panels were also employed. These acoustic panels ensure a comfortable auditory environment, in an otherwise noisy space, and have strong sustainability credentials, whilst positively contributing the interior architectural value.
Significant consideration was given to the users’ experience whilst designing the Rainbow Room within the SEND department. The muted colour palette consists of a soft lilac and off-white. This palette was selected to mitigate visual overstimulation, a sensory processing difference often experienced by individuals with conditions such as autism and ADHD. With the classrooms’ users in mind, suspended acoustic rafters were introduced, in the same lilac colour utilised throughout the space. The acoustic panels, like those used in the EYFS areas, help to absorb sound and therefore potential auditory overstimulation for the children. These panels are cloud-shaped to create a calming experience. Whilst primarily used for noise management, the suspended panels also help to reduce the intensity of the ceiling lights. The space is open-plan to for the safety and passive surveillance of the children. All loose furniture within the Rainbow Room is wooden, as research suggests that natural materials are favoured by children with SEND, creating a sense of calmness.
